Why Women Need Parakaleo Training

Thank you! Because of the 2016 PCA Love Gift, over 40 women received partial scholarships to attend a four-day Parakaleo intensive training retreat. They included women in church planting, campus ministry, pastors’ wives, chaplain wives, seminary wives, missionaries and women’s ministry leaders.

In their applications, women said:

  •  “Other than cooking I feel like I am not trained to do the church job I find myself in… the lack of training makes doing ministry more stressful than it needs to be.
  • “Seminary life has been brutal. It has felt oftentimes like there is only struggle and pain in this season for me, as I haven’t been able to participate in the theological resources (due to working full-time and taking care of small children) …there has been few tangible resources on how to deal with this.”
  • “After having panic attacks this past fall, I am realizing that my anxiety is heightened on Saturday and Sundays… I feel the weight of the expectations of being the pastor’s wife. Also, the challenge of how to navigate hard conversations with friends and church members.”

Some women have already used their Love Gift funds to attend Parakaleo training. One wife wrote,

“Most women [at the retreat] were dealing with deep hurt and resentment as a result of feeling unsupported by husbands or leaders, navigating role ambiguity and sustaining long-term stress… It was evident that without intervention, many of us would not be able to sustain the long-term stress of ministry. Even though the women had a firm grasp of the Bible and even the gospel, most of us lacked the ability to apply the gospel to our hearts in situations of pain and unmet longings. In my 17 years as a Christian, I’ve participated in more conferences, retreats, and spiritual formation trainings that I can count. But I’ve never experienced anything like Parakaleo.”

We thank God for his work in Parakaleo! Our vision is to see every woman in church planting recognized, trained, and supported.
