We all listen closely to last words. They carry such meaning and weight. These were the very last words that Jesus spoke to his disciples and to us: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” For hundreds of years in an effort to obey this command, the Church has sent missionaries all over the world to preach the Gospel. God’s emphasis on this command has not waned. In His eagerness to see us fulfill this great calling God has given us a new strategic way to reach the nations: God has brought the world to our doorstep.
Consider the following:
People who are a part of the minority ethnic groups in our population are growing 600% faster than the population as a whole!
For the first time in the history of the world there are representatives from every nation of the world now present in North America.
Ethnic peoples are now a majority in 25 of the largest cities in North America, making up 61% of Chicago, 73% of New York, and 78% of Los Angeles.
More Polish people now live in Chicago than in Warsaw, Poland.
More Filipinos live in Los Angeles than in any other city of the world.
The United States is the third largest Hispanic nation in the world and soon will replace Spain, currently in second place behind Mexico.
Many of these new immigrants arrive with a huge need: the need to learn English. We can meet that need and reach them with the Gospel through English as a Second Language (ESL) schools. Already dozens of PCA churches across North America have seen God work in amazing ways through their ESL Schools.
MNA has realized the strategic value of ESL and is striving to help more churches within the PCA start ESL Schools. If you are wondering whether your church could be a part of this exciting movement of God, consider some of the following questions:
1. Is the population of your city/county becoming more ethnically diverse? Are you encountering more people of different ethnicities in your daily life at the dry cleaners, fast food restaurants, etc.?
2. Has God put it on your heart or on someone’s heart in your congregation to reach out to these precious people?
3. Do you have a facility that is available to hold classes in?
4. Will your church mission board support this type of ministry with funds?
5. Do you have lay people that are willing to train to become ESL teachers?
If you have answered Yes to these questions, please contact our ESL Director to get information on how to start an ESL ministry at your church.
