Regular ESL Teacher Training

MNA ESL offers a 12-hour ESL Volunteer Teacher Training to get you started in ESL Ministry.  You can either request an in-person training at your church or check to see if there is an in-person one scheduled near you or the full training is also offered on Zoom.  The in-person trainings are done in a Friday night and all day Saturday schedule.  Zoom trainings are done over a series of 4 days.

In this training you will learn:

  • How to start and maintain a fruitful ESL Ministry
  • How to teach ESL to adult Internationals including:
    • How to place students in the proper fluency level classroom
    • b. How to Lesson Plan using professionally written curriculum
    • c. How to introduce new vocabulary & sentences using new vocabulary
    • d. How to get the students to generate their own sentences
  • How to build authentic relationships with your students
  • How to share the Gospel both inside and outside the ESL Classroom

You do not need to speak a foreign language or be a professional teacher to be a volunteer ESL Teacher. All you need to do is speak English and love Jesus and we can teach you the rest. This training is interactive. During the training you will practice the skills that you are learning, create two lesson plans for different fluency levels and come away excited to serve the Lord through ESL Ministry.

In addition to being a great training for new ESL Volunteers, this is a great  training for experienced ESL Volunteers to refresh their skills and be encouraged.

2024 ESL Volunteer Teacher Training Over Zoom

MNA ESL is now offering our regular ESL Volunteer Teacher Training via Zoom.

This training is for live, in-person classroom settings. The training does equip you to teach what you’ll need if you are starting to teach on Zoom but is not focused specifically on teaching ESL using Zoom. (For those of you who are looking for specific information on how to teach your ESL Class on Zoom, please go to our video section and watch the two-hour video on “How to Teach Your ESL Class on Zoom”.  In addition to general information, four different fluency level classes are demonstrated.)

Space Limitation: We will be limiting each training to 24 people, so please register early. To register for a zoom training, please e-mail Nancy Booher at nbooher@pcanet.org.

Cost:  The training is free; however, a donation to MNA ESL is always appreciated. Thank you very much!

***Please note that Zoom ESL Trainings are only meant for:

  1. One or two individuals from a church trying to decide if they want to start an ESL Ministry at their church and host an in-person ESL Training at a later date.
  2. A few individuals joining an existing ESL Ministry where there will not be an in-person ESL Training in the area in time for them to join the ministry.

It is not meant as a way for churches starting new ESL Ministries to train all of their volunteers. Although the zoom trainings are good, in-person trainings are better. Churches starting new ESL Ministries need to schedule an in-person ESL Training.

For more information, please contact Nancy Booher, MNA ESL Ministries Director, at nbooher@pcanet.org.

Instructions for Scheduling an ESL Training

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Training

This training is intended only for those that will teach English overseas. If you are interested in the EFL Training, please contact Nancy Booher at nbooher@pcanet.org. When we have enough people interested in an EFL Training we will schedule one.

Missionaries  across the globe are discovering that offering free English classes in their community can be a bridge to their  neighbors, immigrants, refugees and university students.  But how can you do this if you don’t have a professional degree?  MNA ESL offers an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) Training on Zoom for those that would like to teach English in their mission field.

In this training you will learn:

1. Types of EFL Ministry and their basic organizational structure.
2. How to teach EFL to adults, including
      a. How to place students in the proper fluency level classroom
      b. How to Lesson Plan using professionally written curriculum
      c. How to introduce new vocabulary & sentences using new vocabulary
      d. How to get the students to generate their own sentences
3. How to build authentic relationships with your students

You do not need to speak the language of your students  or be a professional teacher to be a volunteer EFL Teacher. All you need to do is speak English and love Jesus and we can teach you the rest. This training is interactive. During the training you will practice the skills that you are learning, create two lesson plans for different fluency levels and come away excited to serve the Lord through EFL Ministry.

In addition to being a great training for new EFL Volunteers, this is a great training for experienced EFL Volunteers to refresh their skills and be encouraged.

If you have any questions about the training, please contact Nancy Booher at nbooher@pcanet.org or 410-868-3025.  For more information and resources, please go to our website:  www.pcamna.org/esl-ministries.
